Melissa Hughston

Mixed Media Exhibit

May 9 - June 8

Just as we live and die, a flower blooms and withers. All life is forever-changing and my aim is to capture moments within it such as the emergence of bright pollen on a stamen or the wet phase of a pistil's stigma.

Scientific behavioral studies have found that besides being beautiful, flowers trigger uplifting emotions like happiness and have other psychological benefits as well. They heighten feelings of life satisfaction and are a natural and healthful moderator of moods. Their life is so short, yet their movements are so slow. I find this to be an interesting contrast to our lengthy, fast-paced lives. I’m also curious as to what impact a blossom can have through visual images only. This is my attempt to see by mixing media, techniques and knowledge of illustration and biology with my passion for photography together into a cohesive whole. The majority of my botanical illustrations are mixed media pieces where I use pen and ink directly over my original photographs, giving flowers what I would call a 'personality', so to speak.

Melissa Hughston graduated from Utah State University in 1994 with degrees in Illustration and Biology. Since deciding to take up art again a couple of years ago, she has created over 125 pieces. Hughston has exhibited in numerous art fairs, festivals and markets throughout Utah.
