Wayne Shorter 80th Birthday Celebration

Thursday, August 29

An unparalleled lineup of jazz talent comes together to celebrate the great Wayne Shorter! What better way to mark the 80th birthday of legendary saxophonist and composer than this lovely evening of celebration?
The guest of honor will share the stage with some illustrious friends including Sound Prints featuring Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas Quintet with and the star-studded trio of ACS: Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington and Esperanza Spalding. Finally, Mr. Shorter himself takes the stage flanked by his redoubtable quartet, here to thrill us anew at this historic event.

“When was the last time you saw twelve internationally renowned jazz artists – many with ties to our Boston music community – on the same stage in one single evening for a three-hour concert, celebrating one of the greatest jazz masters of our time? I don’t think this rare occasion will be repeated any time soon, if ever!”
—Amy Lam, Celebrity Series of Boston Artistic Programmer

Wayne Shorter Quartet
The legendary jazz saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter made his triumphant return to Blue Note Records after 43 years with the February 5, 2013 release of Without A Net, his searing new album with his long-running Quartet featuring pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade. Shorter first recorded for Blue Note in 1959 as the precocious 26-year-old tenor saxophonist (and prolific composer) in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, which brought him to the attention of label founder Alfred Lion who eventually signed him to his own recording deal. Shorter went on to make a spectacular run of classic albums for Blue Note between 1964-1970.

Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas Quintet
"Sound Prints"
with Lawrence Fields, Linda Oh & Joey Baron
Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano and two-time Grammy nominated trumpeter Dave Douglas are current masters on their respective instruments within the pantheon of modern jazz. From their collaborations on acclaimed recordings such as Trio Fascination: Edition Two and more recently John Zorn’s Stolas: Book of Angels Volume 12, Lovano and Douglas have shown that their distinct and robust voices can lead, blend and push the idiom forward both in composition and improvisation, while embracing the front-line masters of previous generations.

ACS: Allen, Carrington, Spalding
Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding
ACS gathers three of the most important female instrumentalists in current jazz. Formed out of their work together on Carrington’s Grammy Award winning album The Mosaic Project, the small ensemble stretches boundaries and revels in the art form. In response to their debut at New York’s legendary Village Vanguard, The Village Voice remarked, “the set’s expressionistic push-pull turned out to be a show of jazz fealty as disorienting as it was riveting.” The trio is elegant, experimental, and unquestionably bold.
